The campaign was successfully funded with 96,045 Pounds. The Kickstarter campaign goal was 70,000 Pounds. Preparation began in Summer 2015 and the campaign was launched on 21 January 2016. The developers decided to fund the game through Kickstarter, however while in the campaign video they say that they can fund the game via their mobile games, the Kickstarter funds would allow for more time to be invested in the development. It is the first desktop video game developed by the studio whose previous games were all released for mobile devices. Development Ĭraneballs Studio began working on Planet Nomads in January 2015. The planet itself is procedurally generated and the landscape is voxel-based. The main threats to the players survival are alien wildlife living on the planet, extreme weather or radiation. There are multiple biomes that player can come across to. The game is mainly about exploration of the surface of the planet. The developers say the game was inspired by games such as Minecraft, Space Engineers and No Man's Sky. He can create new equipment, vehicles, build shelters, etc. The player is then tasked with surviving with his equipment and skill. The player is an astronaut who crash-lands on an extrasolar planet. It also seals exceptionally well around the temple pieces of eyeglasses or sunglasses. (Hmm, LightSPEED is in Oregon, too.) The foam softens where it touches warm skin, making it capable of accomodating the head shape perfectly with minimal clamping force. The earseals remind me of the aftermarket Oregon Aero “Soft-Seal” cushions that I use on my DCs for increased comfort they use the same sort of temperature-sensitive foam construction. The earcups have a distinctive triangular shape, and are fitted with ultra-deep (inch-and-a-half thick) earseals that contain three layers of temperature-sensitive foam, each layer having a different density than its neighbor. So I imagine that this headset won’t take the kind of physical abuse that a David Clark headset will. The yokes, earcups, and adjusting mechanism are all plastic, too. It turns out that the headband actually has a metal core, but it’s totally sheathed in plastic. It appears to be made entirely of gray plastic, and has a sort of extra-terrestrial look (as if designed by aliens from Roswell, NM). The LightSPEED headset looks, well, different. I’ve already ordered two of the 20K’s for my airplane…just to make sure I beat the rush. They’re showing the 20K for the first time at Oshkosh ’97, and my guess is that once the word’s out they’ll have trouble keeping up with the demand. Recently, LightSPEED introduced their second-generation 20K aviation headset, priced at $439. (More about the 15K later in this article.) About a year ago, they stuck their corporate toe into the aviation headset market by introducing the LightSPEED model 15K ANR headset at Oshkosh ’96, priced at $299. LightSPEED manufactures a variety of precision audio products including wireless microphones, hearing aids, and classroom amplification systems. LightSPEED Technologies in Lake Oswego, Oregon, was founded a few years back by some engineering, manufacturing and marketing people who formerly worked for Tektronix, the giant electronics and instrumentation company. The comfortable, quiet and cheap ANR headset that I’ve been waiting eight years to purchase is now here! Good things do come to those who wait…but sometimes you’ve got to be incredibly patient. But none of them were comfortable enough or quiet enough or cheap enough to persuade me to forsake my trusty DC green-earcup head-in-a-vise passives.īut that just changed! A small audio company in Oregon that nobody ever heard of is about to stand the aviation headset market right on its proverbial ear. I tried the Peltors and the Sennheisers and a couple of the off-brand ANRs too. I’m guilty as charged … and I’ve been called a lot worse. Okay, they’re incrementally better than my faithful old DC passive headsets…but they sure aren’t worth $700 in my book!Ĭall me frugal. They didn’t come close to offering the comfort of the Bose, and I still couldn’t wait to get the darned things off toward the end of a long flight. But again I was disappointed: DC’s ANR offerings were just DC passives with some ANR circuitry added…and not terribly good ANR circuitry at that. This time, I really had my hopes up because I’ve always been a big-time DC fan and my headsets have always been green (as opposed to my wallet). Next, David Clark entered the ANR competition. I flew with it but didn’t like it at all, which didn’t surprise me because I’ve never much cared for Telex headsets. Telex was the first to field a competitive active headset. Meanwhile, the other major players in the aviation headset business introduced their own ANR headsets, all at prices somewhat lower than Bose. And for eight years, Bose has stubbornly held it firm. For eight years, I’ve been waiting for the price to come down. I, on the other hand, have lots of hours wearing other peoples’ Bose headsets and I agree that they’re absolutely marvelous - but I simply have never been able to bring myself to spend a kilobuck on a headset. He’s an “A” and I’m a "B." Carl bought his first Bose headset at that 1989 Oshkosh trailer and has simply refused to use any lesser headset since. No way that I’m going to spend a grand on any headset!”ĪVweb’s publisher Carl Marbach and I make a good case study. Reaction B: “ How much did you say this headset costs? A thousand bucks? Be serious! They’ll never get away with pricing it that high! The price has got to come down! I’ll just wait until it does. Reaction A: “I just can’t believe how quiet and comfortable this headset is! I’ve simply gotta have one!!! I don’t care what it costs.” When Bose introduced the first active noise reduction (ANR) headset to the aviation community at Oshkosh in 1989, pilots who visited Bose’s big black trailer and tried the headset had two distinct reactions to it: Also see Mike Busch’s review of LightSPEED’s newest headset, the 25XL. At first, my wife and I were upset and considered getting another feeder, but as the regular visitors rapidly departed, it was a relief at our advanced age to find life becoming simpler.īesides, we still have a wildlife connection to ruby-throated hummingbirds. I yelled at them, and they stared at me nonchalantly, conveying a sense I was anything but scary, though in both cases they soon sauntered off. Each one attacked the bird feeder, knocking it over, and the second intruder wrecked it. None of our animal visitors, however, caused quite the stir that a pair of black bears produced. Several times I began my day retrieving a little fuzzy from a humane mouse trap placed on a shelf and, following experts’ advice, chauffeured the intruder several miles away, thus assuring no return. A few of them managed to worm their way through drainage pipes into our refrigerator. That influx included a steady flow of mice into our previously pristine basement. Some of the more troublesome drop-ins chose to opt for residence inside the house. While it’s often been fun watching the various creatures scurrying around, sometimes jostling each other, they’ve also created some tensions. In addition, two much larger participants were deer and bears. Many were messy eaters, spewing lots of seeds onto the ground, where appreciative chipmunks, squirrels, mice, rats, and birds too large to perch at the feeder gobbled them up. It was easy enough to attract an abundance of bird species. Meanwhile, ever since 1990, we’ve had a different sort of animal experience once we set up a bird feeder loaded with sunflower seeds. A moment later, she raised her head, searching for us - a haunting last image that keeps barging into memory. When our sweet, gentle Sadie had become nearly too weak to walk, my wife and I brought her to an animal hospital, where she received a tranquilizing shot, the first of two injections. My canine experience has featured three female dogs, all of whom I adored, beginning with Gretchen. He declined, making me realize how pet-prone I’d become. When he returned, I told him I’d be very willing to keep him longer. Soon after I came back to Connecticut, my brother asked me to take care of his feisty dog for a few weeks. Following high school, I spent about 15 years in college, grad school, and at two jobs, moving around too much to consider having any pets.
