The abuser has no anxieties, no emotional pain, or salience/memory for that matter, so the survivor appears to be the crazy one, obsessed with the abuse and that buzzword that seems to ignite arguments about diagnosing people without a degree, etc. I believe this is another amazingly on point and nuanced commentary on the insanity that follows emotionally abusive relationships. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. But there is seemingly no way out but death. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"-being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. Phil Mogg is such an underated vocalist and his lyrics and phrasing are amazing. Lights out captures UFO arriving on the world stage with the whole band pulling together (on record at least). Everything about it just screams class, you just knew from the keyboard opening this was going to be something special and when the power chords come tumbling in it was time to adjust the volume ever higher. This is where new member Paul Raymond really made his mark. That track was the PROG(ish) epic ‘Love To Love’. Other tracks like Lights Out, Just Another Suicide, Too Hot To Handle, Getting Ready, Electric Phase are all great but it was one track in particular which changed how people viewed UFO and it was this one which saw many of the people I know become UFO fans. The ballad ‘Try Me’ has some of Michael Schenker’s finest guitar playing. Even the single seemed better when sequenced between the other songs. Immediately I was taken back with the improved production by Ron Nevision and the sheer quality of the songs and performances. Regardless I paid my money and got a copy in June 1977. In fact Geoff Barton in Sounds started his review with the line I quite like the B Side but my expectations were pretty low based on the single. I had bought the single first and felt the cover of Love’s Alone Again Or was misguided. The Previous years ‘No Heavy Petting’ had crept into the top 100 albums but the release of ‘Lights Out’ really put them on another level. ![]() Alone Again Or / Electric Phase 7″ Vinyl Singleīy 1977 I had been championing UFO amongst anyone who would listen since buying ‘ Force It’ in 1975.
